The claim

“Krill oil is better than fish oil.”

The new human trial makes this claim more understandable — but still not cleanly established. The paper shows that krill oil raised plasma omega-3 levels more than fish oil in healthy adults. That is a meaningful signal about bioavailability. It is not the same thing as proven superiority for cardiovascular outcomes, inflammation, cognition, or overall health.

What the evidence actually shows

What supports the claim

The new study is methodologically much better than typical supplement marketing: a double-blind randomized controlled trial with a direct head-to-head comparison. That is exactly how product forms should be tested.

The result: krill oil increased circulating omega-3 fatty acids more than fish oil. That supports the idea that krill oil may be absorbed more efficiently or distributed differently in this setting. For consumers, that is not trivial, because krill oil is often marketed as more bioavailable — and this study does provide a real human signal in that direction.

Where the claim goes too far

The jump from higher blood levels to better health outcomes is the critical problem.

  • The study mainly measures a surrogate marker: plasma omega-3 levels.
  • It does not directly prove that krill oil prevents heart attacks better, lowers triglycerides more, reduces inflammation more, or supports brain health better than fish oil.
  • Even if krill oil is more bioavailable, that does not automatically mean the real-world clinical benefit is meaningfully greater.
  • Price, dose, EPA/DHA composition, and the exact comparator product all matter.

In short: the paper strengthens the narrower claim that krill oil may be more bioavailable. It does not yet justify the stronger claim that krill oil is clinically better than fish oil.

Verdict

Exaggerated. The new RCT is good enough to take krill oil more seriously than pure premium-marketing hype. But what it mainly shows is a possible bioavailability advantage, not clearly proven clinical superiority. Turning this paper into “krill oil is better than fish oil” goes one step further than the data currently support.
