Recommended Well-designed combo: red yeast rice + CoQ10 for natural lipid support. Note: in the EU, monacolin K >3 mg/day is regulatorily restricted.

Rating breakdown

Evidence for ingredient 7.0/10

Red yeast rice contains monacolin K (a natural statin). Evidence for LDL reduction exists, but regulatorily contested in the EU.

Value for money 7.0/10

€0.58 per day for a red yeast rice + CoQ10 combination from Thorne is reasonable.

Product quality 9.0/10

Thorne guarantees standardized monacolin K content and adds CoQ10 to compensate for the statin-typical CoQ10 depletion.

Label honesty 9.0/10

Monacolin K content and CoQ10 amount clearly declared — typical Thorne transparency.

Third-party testing 9.0/10

NSF Certified for Sport; Thorne's in-house analytical lab tests every batch.

Product Description

Thorne combines red yeast rice with coenzyme Q10. Red yeast rice contains monacolin K — chemically identical to the statin lovastatin. Thorne adds CoQ10 because statins (and monacolin K) can suppress the body’s own CoQ10 production.

What We Like

  • Smart combination: monacolin K + CoQ10 to counter statin-typical CoQ10 depletion
  • Thorne quality with NSF certification
  • Standardized monacolin K content (not guaranteed by all suppliers)
  • 120 capsules = 2 months at 2 capsules/day

What We’re Missing

  • EFSA restricted monacolin K health claims in 2022 (>3 mg/day no longer permitted)
  • Monacolin K is a natural statin — same side effects possible (myopathy, liver values)
  • Do not take without medical supervision, especially if already on statin therapy
  • Citrinin contamination is a risk with low-quality red yeast rice (Thorne controls for this)

Usage Recommendation

2 capsules daily with a meal. Monitor liver values and lipid profile regularly. Do not combine with prescription statins.

Ingredient dossier

CoQ10 reduces mortality in heart failure (Q-SYMBIO); relieves statin-induced muscle pain. In healthy individuals without heart disease, benefits are unproven.
