Recommended Good krill oil with astaxanthin bonus. For phospholipid omega-3, this is the right pick — for pure EPA/DHA per euro, fish oil is cheaper.

Rating breakdown

Evidence for ingredient 8.0/10

Krill oil delivers EPA/DHA in phospholipid form with natural astaxanthin. Good evidence, but fewer studies than classic fish oil.

Value for money 6.0/10

€0.48 per day for krill oil is in line with market pricing, but EPA/DHA content per capsule is lower than concentrated fish oil.

Product quality 8.0/10

Antarctic krill, phospholipid-bound for better absorption, natural astaxanthin as antioxidant.

Label honesty 8.0/10

EPA/DHA and astaxanthin content declared. IKOS certified.

Third-party testing 8.0/10

IKOS 5-star certification for purity and freshness; MSC-certified harvest.

Product Description

Sports Research Krill Oil delivers omega-3 fatty acids in phospholipid-bound form from Antarctic krill. Unlike standard fish oil (triglyceride or ethyl ester form), the fatty acids here are bound to phospholipids, which may facilitate cell membrane integration. Natural astaxanthin protects the oil from oxidation.

What We Like

  • Phospholipid-bound omega-3 for potentially better cellular uptake
  • Natural astaxanthin included as an antioxidant
  • IKOS 5-star certification
  • MSC-certified sustainable harvest
  • Small softgels, minimal fish taste

What We’re Missing

  • Absolute EPA/DHA amount per capsule is significantly lower than concentrated fish oil
  • More expensive per mg EPA/DHA than fish oil alternatives
  • Not suitable for people with shellfish allergy

Usage Recommendation

1 softgel daily with a meal. Krill oil can also be taken on an empty stomach, as phospholipids are less dependent on dietary fat than triglyceride oils.

Ingredient dossier

Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA + DHA) are among the most thoroughly studied supplements. Evidence is strong for triglycerides and high-risk cardiovascular patients; smaller for healthy individuals.
